I began drawing and painting at age 9 and continued through my graduate studies. After following a completely different career path for the next 33 years, supporting the U.S. Congress and traveling the world in work and play, I retired and began taking studio painting and later oil painting classes at Virginia’s Lorton Arts Center and then privately, and currently belong to the Springfield Art Guild, the Vienna Arts Society, and the Art Guild of Clifton (VA). I have studied with Suzanne Clark, Diane Frykman, Marni Maree, and Trisha Adams.
I often paint places I have actually traveled to that have inspired me–so I photograph them and when I return home, paint from my photos in oils. I paint windows, doors, flower shop and other scenes of France and Italy. I also paint still life and landscapes—mostly representational and sometimes nearly photorealistic—including florals from my own prolific gardens. Still, my style is evolving and changing as I continue to paint.
My works have been in many shows and exhibits sponsored by the Vienna Arts Society, Fairfax Art League, Springfield Art Guild, Art Guild of Clifton, and Lorton Arts Center. Many of my paintings have been juried (selected by a judge to be included from a large pool) into:
- Shows in Fairfax, Virginia (Spring 2013 Spotlight Show and Fall/Winter 2013 Celebrate the Season of Art Show),
- The Springfield Art Guild 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 shows at Green Spring Gardens and Springfield Government Center, and
- The Vienna Arts Society’s 2014 Treasury of Art Show, numerous 2015 exhibitions, the Winter 2016 and 2017 Green Spring Gardens juried shows, and the 2016 Spring Delights judged show.
- Received a Special Merit Award among 890 global submissions in the Light, Space & Time online gallery’s 6th Annual “All Women” art competition (Jan. 2017); a Special Recognition Award among 447 global submissions in the same online gallery’s “Cityscapes” competition (Feb. 2017); and a Special Recognition Award among 674 global submissions for its “Animals” exhibition (May 2017).
In June 2015, the Art Guild of Clifton sponsored my first solo art exhibit at the Clifton Wine Shop, followed by another in June 2016. Three of my paintings won Fairfax Art League People’s Choice Awards during 2013. I have sold many paintings and done several paintings on commission. One of my works is hanging in a private collection in Paris, France, while others are in collections from California, to Iowa, to Delaware.
I hosted successful shows at my home studio/gallery since with several other artists and artisans. I teach acrylic painting classes at Northern Virginia Community College’s Lifetime Learning Institute, with the Art Guild of Clifton, and hold classes in my home studio. I am serving on the Boards of Directors and Advisors of the Vienna Arts Society (2016, 2017) and am a juried member of the Oil Painters of America organization.
